THE BEOWULF PROJECT
How was the project done?
The project began to the public as "Mystery Project." For each of the image, the audience is asked to type input of the following:
:Your first reactions:
The only notes given were: Conscious, Subconscious :Let's have fun:
And the results were quite unexpected in many ways. The other time that this was attempted was during my residency in Berlin, Germany. However, those images were representative/surreal. These are more on the side of abstractions.
Why is this called the Beowulf Project? + more How.
First step: I read every chapter of Beowulf. And by "read", I mean that I looked at the words and drew with pencil immediately the image that came up in my head when I scanned certain words.
Second step: I watercolored in the images. These pencil illustrations were representational at first.
Third step: I only look at the watercolored images and only use watercolor (no pencil) to paint on a second blank paper the SHAPES that drew my attention regarding what I drew in the first round.
Layered abstractions.
A good analogy would be comparing abstracting computer languages in layers from machine level to human visual level
What are the reactionary results?
